This blog is all about bringing style and elegance to the home. The art of dressing your home goes beyond hanging a few items on the wall and arranging furniture. Much like a fabulous set of earrings or a new stylish handbag may take your little black dress from fine to fabulous, home accesories and key furnishings can take your rooms from ho-hum to singing the Halleluiah Chorus! Join with me as we discover new ways to add panache to every room of the house.

Express Yourself! - Wall Decor - Lesson #2

No, I am not referring to the popular hit by Madonna! I'm talking about expressing yourself through your wall decor. It is said that your walls make up 60% of your room. That's a pretty hefty percentage. So what do your walls say about you? Your home is an expression of who you are, and your walls are your own personal art gallery. The walls in your home should reflect your interests, personality, and your memories. In other words your life! Fill a wall with faces you love, places you've traveled, or scenes that make you dream. Group framed artwork for a wall filled with color, or go black and white for a dramatic gallery effect! Remember, the choice is yours. My SIL, Linda, is a professional photographer. She also is a missionary. On her latest trip to Cambodia, she was able to capture some breathtaking pictures. I am always amazed by what Linda sees in her lens. So during the holiday, we decided to give her Florida condo a mini-makeover. We used her own photography as our inspiration for color and theme and enlarged prints to frame in 24"x36" black frames. The result was stunning. I will share pictures with you in an upcoming post. So whether you are going for a modern feel, traditional style or casual comfort, what you frame, and how you hang it, is completely up to you.
A few weeks ago I offered a FREE training class on how to hang wall decor. Below, I will share with you a handout on Asymmetrical Wall Design.
Asymmetrical balance is more challenging than symmetrical groupings. However, they are usually more interesting to experience and typically less formal in appearance. I use alot of asymmetrical groupings in my home. I like to call my style "Today's Living", traditional lines and colors with a casual, up to date approach. The examples above show that balance is achieved in an asymmetrical grouping but not by identical items. Wall groupings include framed art, mirrors, ledges, shelves and sconces.
The examples below are of Symmetrical Wall Designs.

Symmetry is the placement of even patterns. Usually the focal point is the center and other wall art such as mirrors, shelves, sconces, plates or smaller prints are placed evenly on both sides. While some smaller accessories that you use on your shelves or ledges may vary, all the major elements of the wall grouping should balance evenly. If you were to draw an imaginary line down the middle of your grouping, one side would be a mirror image of the other. In the examples I've shown above, you see perfect balance on either side.
Alot of ladies tell me they have a blank wall, they purchased some wall art, but ask, Now what?
Well contrary to popular belief, your task is more involved than pounding a whole in the wall and hanging your picture level. Pleasing wall arrangements follow the same interior design rules used for placing furniture in a room - Rhythm, Balance and Weight.
  • Let's talk about RHYTHM. Do you want a serene room or a stimulating one? Well, rhythm, the movement from one object to the next, contributes to a room's tone. Creating a certain rhythm depends on the size, shape, and spacing of objects.
  • BALANCE is next. This refers to the even distribution of visual weight within your display. Maintaining balance is important because an unbalanced arrangement may look top-heavy, bottom heavy, or as if a side is falling off. Symmetrical wall design is the most straightforward illustration of balance. But you can achieve balance with asymmetrical groupings as well using techniques that pay attention to rhythm, weight and scale.
  • Lastly is WEIGHT. Sometimes an object's "visual weight" demands it be displayed alone. Anything that is large, dark, bright, boldly patterned, or oddly shaped will look heavier and bigger than an item small, pale, solid, and predictably shaped.

The absolute, fool-proof method used for years is to trace framed art and wall accessories on plain brown craft paper. Cut out the shapes and tape them to your wall. Once you have achieved a grouping that is pleasing to your eye, simply measure where the hangers are positioned, mark it on your craft paper, then hammer away - right through your paper! Remove the craft paper and hang your art.

We'll take about other aspects of arranging wall art in later posts. There are so many fun and creative things we can do to make our wall express ourselves!

Tomorrow is TABLESCAPE TUESDAY and I will be sharing a table I've called "SPICE TRADE". I hope you will come back and visit with me tomorrow. Until then,

Happy Decorating!

Baby, it's cold outside!

Oh, it's been soooo cold today! We woke up to 5 degree weather today! Burrrr! That was a record low for this part of NC! Needless to say we spent the entire day "IN". I stepped out to get the mail around mid-day and the short walk to the mailbox and back had my teeth chattering. I like winter but this bone-chilling cold is not my idea of fun! So with not much to do but read, surf the net, and read some more, I decided to go "window shopping" online. Here's what I looked at:
DISHES! Beautiful, colorful dishes!
Aren't these pretty? Of course they caught my attention because of the animal print. I love almost anything done in Cheetah or Leopard.
This lovely set of elegant dishes reminded me of Florida. So textural. I love the embossed crocodile look the edge of the plates. I just imagined having these dishes and setting a gorgeous table in my Florida home, inviting my BFF and her family over for something wonderfully delicious right off the grill!

This pattern caught my eye too! It sort of reminds me of snowflakes which has been on the mind of my 9-year old alot lately. This pattern is by designer Tracy Porter.

My beloved Roosters! I might just have to make an on-line purchase for these. I noticed they were on sale. The red would complement my decor just perfectly!

Here is another Rooster pattern. Did anyone watch Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee yesterday? Her kitchen was accessorized in black and white. She showed us a lovely tablescape. The centerpiece was a magnificent "Chandalabra" (a cross between a chandelier and candelabra). I hope I've spelled that correctly. What inspiration! These dishes would also make a stunning black and white tablescape.

These blue and taupe dishes are just the thing! I love the soft color and the rustic look. I immediately thought of a seafood feast. Anybody out there a fan of the Barefoot Contessa? (Food Network?) Okay, I admit it. I'm a FN junkie. Anyway, yesterday she catered an appreciation dinner and prepared an incredible seafood platter of lobster, blue crab, oysters, clams, and jumbo shrimp. These dishes would be lovely for a summer seafood party by the pool.

This pattern is quite beautiful too. It looks like mosaic tiles form together to make the grape clusters.

Asian cooking - that's what I thought when I saw these dishes. Last year at Christmas I received a gorgeous wok. Ever since then I've been trying my hand at Asian cooking. I also received a rice or vegetable steamer. What a wonderful duo! Maybe the next get together I host will be Asian themed. So artistic.

I couldn't stay cold very long looking at these sunny Daffodil plates. How I would love these for an Easter table or Spring Garden Party.

This is another Tracy Porter design. I adore this pattern. It's so colorful, festive and fun. The blue inside the cup is such a nice contrast to the peony pink and coral on the plates. I definitely would find lots of ways to incorporate these stylish pieces into as many tablescapes and occasions as possible. Maybe Mother's Day or a June bridal shower.
Oh well, so much for my window shopping excursion today. Hope you enjoyed coming along for the dream. If any of these beauties caught your eye you can find them all at Horchow.com
Just a little update - the powder room is almost done. We just have to finish the border and accessories and we will be ready for the reveal. It has taken longer than I planned but other more important tasks popped up so my Power Room was banished to the back burner but the end is nearing and I'm so happy. The red paint on the walls is incredible! I think I will have to find another area to use this luscious color. Stay tuned just a little while longer. Until then,
Happy Decorating!

The Winner Is....and a look at a Collection from the Past

I'm back! Sorry for the down-time. I had a few "unexpected" delays hinder me from posting yesterday. First, I want to announce our WINNER of the $100 Gift Certificate to Home Interiors! The winner is........
MELISSA MILLER at MELISSA'S HEART AND HOME!
CONGRATULATIONS, MELISSA!
Please email me so I can obtain your address and give your all the wonderful details about how you can use your $100 gift to purchase lovely home accents!
Now, I had promised to share a special collection with you. This collection is very near and dear to my heart because it was inherited from maternal Grandmother, Mary Catherine.
Have you ever heard of MILK GLASS? Well I had not until my Grandmother introduced me to it when I was a young teenager. I used to spend weeks out of the summer break with her, helping her cook and garden. It was such a wonderful time. I always admired the pretty white dishes, cups, serving bowls and vases she kept on display in her kitchen. When she passed away in 2002, she left this collection to me. I don't think it's worth very much as I can not find any distinguishing marks or names on it, but due to the sentimental value it's priceless!
This is a punch bowl set that originally came with 10 cups. Grandma always used this at Christmas, New Year's and Grandpa's birthday dinner. Somewhere along the way one of the cups was broken.
The punch bowl is a two-piece set. The bowl sits on top of a detached pedestal.

I love the delicate pattern and the tiny scallops along the rim of the bowl. This is the bowl turned upside down in order to see the details. The bowl can also be used as a serving bowl since it has a ring at the base to balance it on the tabletop.
Oops! Forgot to rotate this picture...okay just tilt your head a bit. ; )
This it the detachable base.
This is one of the punch cups. It has the same delicate pattern as the bowl. So pretty! Just looking at all these old pieces made me get a little melancholy. My Grandma was an incredible lady. Talk about a cook! She made everything from scratch. She had a recipe for a Banana Cake that she coated with a meringue. I've never seen or tasted anything like it! Unfortunately, she didn't write down her recipes and it has been lost. My Mother and Aunt have tried to remember the ingredients and measurements but something just isn't the same.

Isn't this platter pretty? I just love the open scallop design. This was the only platter she would use to serve her Easter Ham.

I like to place it on a plate stand and display it for decorative purposes.

Several of her serving bowls were the same pattern.
An embossed cluster of grapes and grape ivy leaves.
Here is a closer look at the pattern. You can see the grape clusters clearly here.

The serving dishes were in various sizes, some on pedestals, some footed, all of them beautiful.

In the picture below, you can see a different pattern of what looks like an oak leaf.
I am thinking of designing a trio of floral arrangements for my dinning room table in these. Something light and springy just in time for Palm Sunday and Easter. Maybe some pretty daffodils or tulips. Hopefully my bulbs will bloom and be plenteous this spring.
In this picture, you will see my favorite three pieces - an elegant pedestal fruit bowl and two matching candle holders. You can you tapers or place votive cups in the holders for a different look. Wouldn't this look lovely with an arrangement of soft peachy-pink roses and lilies for a nice dinner party?
These two vases are smooth and creamy. The only details are the flared tops and a raised band of vertical detailing just below the rim.

Here is a fun assortment of bud vases - only two alike in the lot. I envision using these with single stems of Gerbera Daisies in bright shades of Red, Orange, Yellow, and Pink this summer for a Garden Party on the back deck.

Whatever purposes these cherished items serve this year, I will always remember them in Grandma's house, on her table, filled with delicious, homemade food seasoned with the kind of love that only Grandma's can add.
My next mission is to find a cabinet worthy to display these priceless memories.
Until then,
Happy Decorating!

The Cook's Corner

Welcome to The Cook's Corner! Today I will be sharing another quick and easy recipe for a Simple Supper. I also want to thank everyone who participated in my Give-A-Way. As of 12 noon today, the comments closed and now we will be selecting a winner! I will be compiling all of your wonderful suggestions for saving money and sharing those later this week. Some of you are very thrifty indeed! I thought we would take a little tour around my kitchen before we start cooking. My kitchen is truly the heart of our home. It seems that we spend more time here than anywhere, especially during the week. This is "Renny, the Rooster". Renny is short for Reynolds. Don't ask, it's a long, long story. He stands watch over my kitchen island and keeps me company while I cook. Although I've noticed that our conversations are rather one sided. LOL!
My kitchen is very open and spacious. I have tons of storage space which is a huge blessing! My home in FL had what we called a "one-butt kitchen"! That means that only one butt at a time could be in the kitchen it was that small! So when we moved to NC, a big kitchen was at the top of my wish list. All the cabinets are Maple, hardware is brushed nickle and the appliances are Stainless Steel. We had the Italian tile installed after we purchased the house. I love the texture and color variations. So warm. Like hot caramel sauce - yum, yum!

I chose a very neutral color pallet for my kitchen. The walls are painted a pale yellow-gold and accents in brown and green make it very "earthy". As you can see I like Roosters. It seems that everyone has something they collect in their kitchen. What do you have in your kitchen? Bunnies? Fruit? Grapes? Pigs? Cows? Wine Bottles? French Pastry Chefs? You name it! It's your kitchen. Do what makes you happy! I like to accessorize my counters. Since we are in our kitchen so much, I thought we should have pretty things to look at and create ambiance. I use candles in my kitchen to create a sense of warmth and welcome. Yesterday it was rather cold so I lit about a dozen candles. It really helped to dispel the dreariness of a wintery day.

One of these days I will have Gourmet Kitchen complete with a 6-burner range, double ovens and down-draft grill but for now this is where the action takes place. Yesterday I decided to fix homemade Spaghetti Sauce. This is another recipe from my M-I-L, Ann. (Thanks, Mama) I like this recipe because it is very flexible, quick and super easy. With only 9 ingredients and most of them pantry staples, it's a breeze to cook up a satisfying meal for Honey and the boys! Let's take a look:
Annie's Sauce
1 can tomatoes, undrained (crushed or diced, I prefer Hunt's Petite Diced 100% Natural)
1 can tomato sauce (I used Hunt's 100% Natural)
1 can tomato paste (I used Hunt's 100% Natural)
1 pound lean ground beef or 1/2 pound white mushrooms (vegetarian)
1 medium green bell pepper, chopped
2 medium sweet onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
Optional
2 teaspoon Oregano
1 teaspoon dried Basil

  1. First, saute peppers, onions, garlic and beef with salt and pepper.
  2. If you wish you can substitute the ground beef for fresh or canned sliced mushrooms. In this case add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to saute your vegetables.

3. Cook until the beef is browned and your vegetables are tender-crisp.

4. Drain off fat. Return mixture to sauce pan and add diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste and spices. Simmer for 1 hour.
5. Meanwhile bring 4 quarts of salted water to boil. Add pasta of choice and cook about 7-9 minutes. I use Hodgson Mill Whole Wheat Spaghetti. It cooks up wonderfully.

All that is needed to complete this Simple Supper is a Garden Salad of Romaine lettuce, sweet Grape Tomatoes, White Onions, Cucumbers and Bell peppers.

Warm up some thick slices of 12-Grain bread (my fav!) and your dinner is served.

Tomorrow I will post the winner for the $100 Gift Certificate for
Home Interiors! Again, thanks for participating. I will also share a collection with you that is very near and dear to my heart. It is something that I inherited from my maternal Grandmother, Mary Catherine. See ya then!
Happy Cooking!

Tablescape Tuesday - A Valentine's Dinner

Welcome to another TABLESCAPE TUESDAY! Thanks to Susan at http://betweennapsontheporch.blogspot.com for hosting this fun blog party every week! Today I wanted to share a special VALENTINE'S TABLE. I know we are a little over a month away from that day, but I was inspired last week with my "Junk to Gems" post and decided to get a jump start on my table. In the past, me and my BFF, Melanie at Bella-Mella, would host a 7-course Valentine's Dinner for several of our church friends. It was always alot of fun. Once I move to NC that was not a possibility and I really miss that. This year hubby and I decided to host a small dinner for three other couples. It definitely won't be a 7-course dinner but I wanted to make it special all the same. Now that the table setting is complete I can turn my attention to the menu. Let's take a look at this "rosy" table.
The traditional RED and WHITE color scheme was my starting point. I mixed metallic gold and black for balance. My favorite IVORY tablecloth was the foundation I built upon. A round RED ruffled placemat and GOLD charger added dimension and depth.
I then layered my ROYAL SCOTLAND dinner plates. These were a CHRISTMAS present from my hubby (thank you, honey!). The dishes are white with a red border and gold accents and outer rim.

In the center of each plate I placed a gold CHERUB. These are actually Christmas ornaments that I went and unpacked just for this table! I must be crazy! I tied a red silk ribbon at the top where the gold loop for hanging it on the Christmas tree was attached. I think I will tie a name card on each one the evening of the dinner.

Here is a closer view of the china and the Cherub.

This is the planter that I rescued from the trash. After painting it and designing a red ROSE floral arrangement in the top, it became my focal point and inspiration for the CHERUB and ROSES theme. I used a piece of upholstery fabric under the center piece. This fabric was left over from when hubby recovered my dinning room chairs last year. The fabric is black with little gold dots. On top of that I set a gold metal serving tier trimmed in acrylic clear beads and teardrops.

For special dinners I like to dress-up my chairs. I've decided to use RED satin pillows in the backs of my chairs this time. Not all of my pillows are the same but they work well together because of the common color.

I also placed a CRYSTAL dessert cup in the center of each plate. I will fill these with candies the evening of the party. If I do that now, my kids will "sneak-a-treat". LOL.

I placed RED mosaic votive holders around the table close to each placesetting. I then scattered acrylic beads shaped like DIAMONDS around the tabletop.

On either side of the centerpiece, I placed two small gold urns filled with RED VELVET roses. This helped to tie in with the fluffy velvet RED ROSE napkin rings. I purchased the napkin rings at BBandBeyond some time ago. I have found them to be so versatile. I've used them at Christmas, Valentine's Day, and a Summer Garden Party.

Here's a full view of the centerpiece. I also tucked single blooms of red roses around the base.

My CRYSTAL goblets are edged with a GOLD rim. These were a CHRISTMAS gift from my Mother-in-Law, Ann a few years ago. I think she must know my tastes pretty well. Thanks, Mama! :)

The floral arrangement is a mix of red ROSEBUDS, English IVY, and some white and light green pepper berries. I completed it by added in twigs that had been spray painted white. That concludes the tour. I am so glad you stopped by today. Don't forget that we are still accepting comments for the $100 Gift Card Give-A-Way. See my post from yesterday - Moneysaver Monday - for all the details. Spread the word and you can be entered twice. Comments may be left until 12 noon, EST, on Wednesday. One lucky ducky will be picked Wednesday afternoon and posted! Good luck!
As always,
Happy Decorating!

Moneysaver Monday and My First Give-A-Way!

I LOVE to save money! What about you? If you listen to the news or read the headlines, now more than ever, Americans need to SAVE money! Some friends of mine have been sharing ideas on how to save and stretch our dollar. One of my friends is organizing a Children's clothing "Swap Meet". This is where mothers bring all of the clothes their children have outgrown and swap them with mothers who have the sizes they need. No money changes hands. It's just a way to help each other out. A local grocery store in my town offers triple coupon days once per month. I personally saved $84 on my grocery bill by clipping coupons and shopping for the pantry "staples" and canned goods during the triple coupon days. Another lady I know is carpooling to save money and planning her errands around her trips out to converse gas. Even though gas prices have gone down this is a good practice.
I would like to hear of ways that you are saving money and stretching your dollar. And to reward you for your participation and to help you save money in 2009, I am offering my first "GIVE-A-WAY". As I mentioned in my side bar, I have been affiliated with Home Interiors & Gifts for about 14 years. I recently was given a $100 Gift Card to use toward FREE home accessories and accents. I will be giving this g.c. to one lucky winner in a drawing on WEDNESDAY. Here's how you can enter:
  1. Leave me a comment and tell me how you are saving money and be entered once.
  2. Post something on your blog telling your friends and readers about the "give-a-way" and be entered twice.
  3. It's just that easy!

Below is a sampling of some of the items you can purchase with your gift card! Once the winner is drawn, I will contact the lucky ducky and we will make arrangements to get the gift card to you and give you all the details you need.

Thanks for participating! And spread the word! Comments will be accepted through WEDNESDAY, 12 noon, EST.

Tomorrow is TABLESCAPE TUESDAY and I will be posting a special VALENTINE'S Table.

See ya then!
